Couloir on the North Face of Timpanogos, UT
Paul Sherman climbs a steep couloir on the north aspect of Timpanogos. This couloir had a deep runnel of constantly flowing spin drift that was a bit disconcerting at the time. It also made for a somewhat difficult ski descent.
The Grunge Couloir

Paul Sherman drops into the White Fang Couloir. We got this couloir in some great snow which made it one epic descent. This couloir gets really steep at the top. It's not for the timid! It also has no short approach which makes it a bit of a slog in but who doesn't enjoy a good sufferfest?

Paul Sherman nears the top of this skinny steep couloir on the central spine of Mt Nebo. This is a long tedious approach; it is considerably harder than the couloirs on the north peak. This had a very exposed feel to it.

This couloir is incredibly skinny and steep. It can be seen from the opposing ridgeline in Mineral Basin. Paul Sherman and I were near the top when it ripped out on us. Fortunately, it wasn't deep enough to sweep us or it would have been a rough ride.

Paul Sherman plants the Verts at 50%. Verts are the crampon of the Wasatch. Most of the year the snow is soft enough to make post holing a chore. Verts have a rigid front point design that keeps you on top of the snow while giving a crampon feel on the steeps.

The snow stayed pretty hard so we had to cut in steps with our ice axes. Sometimes poor planning makes for the greatest memories.

Paul Sherman Climbs Stairs Gulch West Headwall. Most people ski Stairs Gulch via Bonkers and do the car shuttle thing. The West Headwall is considerably more committing. It is really steep and always has variable snow conditions. The next time I do this couloir I am bringing crampons for down low and verts for up high.
